What I do know, was 1967 was the last year of pure speed. There were no safety devices to save lives, no seatbelts even!
The Drivers sat in their cars Gas Tank, and the 1100 pound Race Cars were fitted with 3 Litre engines making upwards of 300 horsepower and Hard treaded tires that offered little to no grip. These cars had no aerodynamic downforce, in fact, their slippery shapes created LIFT, further aggrevating the cars tendency to want to break traction.
It was a deadly period for Race Car drivers, but it was glorious too. The Brabham BT24 won the world championship. But the lotus showed the future with its awesome new Cosworth DFV V8, the engine that would dominate into the 80's.
And one lowly American in a purely European sport happened to build his own race car, the Titanium Eagle, the T1G. Dan Gurney would win the Race of Champions and the Belgian GP with his Weslake V12 powered Eagle and would have taken home several more wins if not for mechanical failures.
Please forgive any errors I made, I was going off of memory again.
